Anyhoo.. After discussing the differences between powerviolence and grindcore with a friend. We came up with the theory that they are both a combo of death metal and hardcore punk. Grindcore is slightly more "metal" and powerviolence is slightly more punk. Essentially powerviolence is a looser and more gnarly version of grindcore IMO.

WhatsApp: +86 18203695377Powerviolence is a back to basics movement in hardcore, whereas grindcore is an outgrowth of peace punk / anarchopunk that was more influenced by things like power electronics and noise than crust. Sludge is basically just really slow crust punk, IMHO.

The difference is clearer when you listen to early examples of each. Check out Napalm Death's Scum and compare that to Neanderthal's Fighting Music. PV also tends to have more slow sections.

Didn't include much powerviolence but that is currently my favorite subgrene of extreme punk as well as what my band plays. Think more hardcore punk side of grind as opposed to its metal influence.

WhatsApp: +86 18203695377A good example of a powerviolence band with emo influences is Combatwoundedveteran. screamo is like the 90s posthardcore style of emo taken up a notch in intensity, notably in the vocals. An exemplary screamo band that wouldn't (shouldn't) get called emoviolence is I, Robot. Still a little frantic, but not as fast or chaotic as powerviolence.
