A new classification of failure mechanism of mining tools was suggested. 33 cutting picks pf a drum shearer machine in a longwall mine was studied. 3D geometrical, macroscopic and microscopic analysis were carried out. Design and operational guidelines were recommended to reduce the tool wear.
